CHAPTER OBJECTIVES
Based upon their reading of Chapter 5, students will be able to:
- understand and describe the research design and the classic experimental design.
- discuss causal inferences, including the distinct operations of demonstrating covariation, eliminating spurious relations, and establishing the time order of the occurrences.
- describe the three components of a classic research design: comparison, manipulation, and control.
- distinguish between external and internal validity.
- understand and describe the types of threats to the internal validity of experiments and the different methods of controlling these threats.
- define and give examples of the four major types of research designs.
