Psychology of Sex and Gender is an engaging and empirical text that not only introduces students to foundational (i.e., historical/contextual) understandings in the topic of sex and gender, but also moves them into cutting-edge topics and research that encourages them to (re)think their perceptions of gender in the world around them. It goes beyond the "standard coverage", presenting topics with recognition of the biopsychosocial nature of sex and gender and encouraging students to examine the basis of similarities and differences among genders. Many textbooks in this domain focus more on women’s studies or psychology of women without much coverage of other genders issues. Burns provides a comprehensive and balanced sex/gender perspective integrating contemporary research.

Features
- Empirical, contemporary, and culturally relevant , this text clearly examines the complex relationship between gender and behavior examining the most current research with a diverse and global perspective.
- The author integrates a Controversial Issues dialogue after the discussion of current research in each chapter. Using a sex and gender framework for understanding, students are asked to weigh the evidence and formulate an opinion on the matter. Myth Busters take on erroneously held beliefs and explains why they are untrue and provides evidence to support the explanation. This feature quite naturally lends itself to classroom discussion or papers.
- Contemporary examples can be found throughout the book including discussions of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the rise of the #MeToo movement, new gender-neutral clothing lines for children, and backlash on stereotyping by "#distractingly sexy scientists."
- Accessible and student-friendly approach informs students of our current understanding of sex and gender issues while identifying (mis)representations in the media and pop psychology
- Learning objectives are presented at the beginning of each chapter to introduce and challenge students to explore the key concepts to be covered within the chapter and to provide a framework for the competencies developed as a result of reading the chapter.
- Critical Thinking Checks invite students to be critical thinkers rather than passive consumers of concepts. Each chapter includes between one and three questions after each major section. These questions are designed to evoke thought and draw upon the material just covered. These can also be used for discussion starters.
- Links and Logic at the end of each chapter provide carefully selected webpages, videos, and additional references to educational materials (logic) for those who want to learn more.
- Summary at the end of each chapter, provide brief wrap up of the key concepts covered within the chapter.
- LaunchPad with e-book for Psychology of Sex and Gender is an online coursespace that offers tutorials, activities, practice quizzes, videos, and video activities.
New to This Edition
"Since first reviewing this book in its infancy I have been anxious to adopt it for my class. An even-handed text that is accessible to the 200-400 course level is a gaping hole in the literature for an unbiased gender-psychology curriculum. This text is perfect for my course. I have reviewed many, and believe me, this is by far the best, and closest to an empirical, yet culturally relevant text on behavior and gender."
– Jill Kaplan, University of Miami
"The writing style was very engaging and easily understood. Far superior to that found in my current text which can be a bit hard to follow. I would describe it as a relevant, up to date text that provides a very well-rounded approach to the topic of gender. I am very impressed with the approach that the author has taken with this text." – James Vaughn, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma
"I like that men’s issues and culture are given a fair share of the content, as well as a chapter on development. – Isabelle D. Cherney, Merrimack College
"A good cross-cultural text on gender and sexuality that incorporates research better than most current texts." - Katherine Aumer, Hawaii Pacific University
