                                              Teachers know that English Language Learners are capable of high-level academic
                                              work, but they need the right supports. That’s why  —  in addition to the supports already

                                              Foundational Texts  —  we offer ELL Essential Guide handouts for every page of the
                                              student edition. These handouts offer a suite of ELL supports, such as a summary that
                                              previews the text, additional context or information to help build background
                                              knowledge, detailed help with vocabulary, and more. A Glossary/Glosario in the back of
                                              the book provides helpful definitions and examples of academic vocabulary in both
                                              English and Spanish.


                                              Cultural Relevance
                                              In addition to supporting students through the differentiation tools described above, we
                                              also recognize that many of our students today come from a wide range of cultural
                                              backgrounds and therefore have built in several components to support the need for

                                              culturally relevant teaching practices in the AP  Literature classroom. First, research
                                              has shown that students need to have opportunities to see themselves in the texts they
                                              read, so you will find texts written by authors of varying backgrounds, differing by race,
                                              ethnicity, culture, and gender in every chapter. Second, throughout this Teacher’s
                                              Edition are notes written by skilled and thoughtful teachers currently working in
                                              classrooms and as teacher trainers around the country that are intended to give you
                                              suggestions for culturally responsive practices, including questions to ask, pitfalls to be
                                              aware of, and contexts to provide. No students should feel unsafe or disconnected in
                                              our classrooms because of their cultural background, and these resources are intended

                                              Every day of your course is preparation for the AP  Exam, and every interaction

                                              between the teacher and the students should focus on the goals of the AP  Exam.

                                              According to the College Board course overview, AP  English Literature and
                                              Composition is a course in which students cultivate their understanding of literature
                                              through reading and exploring varied texts, such as poetry, drama, novels, and short
                                              fiction. Students develop literary arguments through reading, analyzing, and writing
                                              texts as they explore Big Ideas like character, structure, and figurative language. These
                                              goals can be accomplished through practicing the skills that will be tested on the exam,
                                              for which more details are available in the College Board’s Course and Exam
                                              Description (CED). Do take advantage of the College Board’s resources for exam
