Dear Colleagues:

The Language of Composition is the product of years of experience and collaboration that
began with workshops in which we were learning how to incorporate the theory and practice
of rhetoric into high school curricula. The conversations that began in these workshops
extended to years of discussions about what worked with eleventh- and twelfth-graders
and how to prepare students to succeed in or place out of first-year composition. The more

we taught our students and worked with teachers, the more we came to appreciate the
interrelationship between reading and writing about rhetoric and argument.
We designed The Language of Composition to be the first college-level textbook
                                    ®
intended specifically for the AP English Language and Composition course. Its
goal has always been to help high school students read, analyze, and write with the
same level of skill and sophistication as they would in a first-year composition course
Distributed by Bedford, Freeman & Worth Publishers. Strictly for use with its products. Not for redistribution.

in college. To help students achieve success in the AP course and beyond, The
Language of Composition specifically targets the development of the skills and habits
                                   ®
of mind at the heart of the AP English Language course.
To that end, The Language of Composition offers a diverse collection of rhetorically
rich selections — including visual texts — that are both interesting and suitable for a high
                school audience; practical advice on rhetoric, argument, reasoning, reading, and writing;
and special attention to the synthesis and visual analysis skills students must hone for

                                                                 ®
success in the AP English Language and Composition course and for the AP Exam.
Sometimes we get lucky and life gives us second (and third — and even fourth!)
chances, as it has with The Language of Composition. Because of the excitement
of teachers and students who have been using the book and the insights they have
so generously shared, we learned what was working well, what needed adjusting or
expansion, and what updating would make it more engaging for today’s students.
                                                                 ®
We’ve also made changes to address the Big Ideas and Skills of the new AP Course
and Exam Description to ensure student success.
Welcome to The Language of Composition, Fourth Edition, a textbook that makes
                                       ®
creating an engaging and unique AP English Language course not only easy but also
enjoyable. We hope this book leads to lively class discussions, insightful student writing,
                                  ®
and higher scores on the AP Exam. More than that, we hope students emerge from this
course with a healthy curiosity and an ability to think critically about the world around us.
