Readings provide models of good writing, and writing about readings promotes deeper understanding of their content, builds connections with prior knowledge, and provide topics for essay writing.

Thorough Coverage of Non-cognitive Topics During the development of the ALP model at CCBC, it became apparent that non-cognitive issues play a significant role in derailing student success. As a result, Peter Adams and his faculty developed a series of units for use in the corequisite classroom to enable students to problem-solve solutions and find appropriate resources and support services.

Active Learning approach The Hub is built on active learning pedagogy. Through group work and collaborative activities students learn more, make connections within and between content from different courses, improve skill transfer, and build peer support.

Unique Inductive Approach to Grammar In keeping with the overall active learning and inquiry-based pedagogy, students work in small groups to review pairs of correct and incorrect sentences to figure out for themselves the grammar rules they represent, recording what they have learned for future reference. Learning grammar this way provides students with a deeper understanding of how these rules work in the texts they read and how to apply them in their own writing.

Peter Adams

Peter Adams is the creator of and nations leading expert on the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) and a passionate advocate for updating the current structure of developmental education in America to help more students succeed. As a teacher at the Community College of Baltimore County, Peter saw the opportunity to improve success rates among students placed in developmental writing courses, and so he created and developed the ALP model to meet that need. Peter spent eight years teaching ALP and an additional seven years training faculty across the country on how to implement the ALP model. As of 2017, more than 300 schools in 20 states offer sections of ALP and 7 states have adopted the model statewide. Through his deep experience with the course, its students, and its instructors, Adams truly understands the challenges of this course and is uniquely qualified to author The Hub. Peters professional experience includes tenure with the editorial board of the Journal of Basic Writing and leadership positions with the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). His two influential articles "Basic Writing Revisited" (Journal of Basic Writing, 1993) and "The Accelerated Learning Program: Throwing Open the Gates" (Journal of Basic Writing, 2009) were both major catalysts for the nationwide movement toward mainstreaming basic writers.
