While this annotation definitely shows an active, engaged reader, there are so many
insights and ideas and questions and observations — it’s a bit of a noisy process. So, to
begin sorting through to figure out what you need to do next to deepen your understanding,
let’s write a paragraph of exploratory writing. Doing so should help you sift through your
observations and order your thoughts.

DIFFERENTIATION
Scaffolding
Ask students to write an exploratory
paragraph using the model annotations, as
well as their own. You may ask them to first
list the demands of the prompt, and then
identify and discuss two to three positions
about the complex relationship between the
mother and daughter. Remind students that
this type of writing is rather informal and may
pose open-ended questions.
