handouts for every page of the book in the Teacher’s Resource Materials. These
handouts offer a suite of ELL supports, such as a summary that previews the text,
additional context or information to help build background knowledge, detailed help
with vocabulary, and more. A Glossary/Glosario in the back of the book provides helpful
definitions and examples of academic vocabulary in both English and Spanish.
Cultural Relevance

In addition to supporting students through the differentiation tools described above, we
also recognize that many of our students today come from a wide range of cultural
backgrounds and therefore have built in several components to support the need for

culturally relevant teaching practices in the AP English Language classroom. First,

research has shown that students need to have opportunities to see themselves in the
texts they read, so in every chapter, you will find texts by writers of varying backgrounds
in regards to race, ethnicity, culture, and gender.
Second, throughout this Teacher’s Edition are notes written by skilled and thoughtful
teachers currently working in classrooms and as teacher trainers around the country.
These marginal supports include suggestions for culturally responsive practices,
including questions to ask, pitfalls to be aware of, and contexts to provide. No students
should feel unsafe or disconnected in our classrooms because of their cultural
background, and these resources are intended to help us support all of our students,
®
leading them on the path to success in AP courses, college, and beyond.

Preparing Students for the AP
English Language and Composition Exam
®
According to the College Board course overview, AP English Language and
Composition is an introductory college-level composition course. Students cultivate
their understanding of writing and rhetorical arguments through reading, analyzing, and
writing texts as they explore topics like rhetorical situation, claims and evidence,
reasoning and organization, and style. These goals can be accomplished through
practicing the skills that will be tested on the exam, for which more details are available
in the College Board’s Course and Exam Description (CED). We recommend taking
advantage of the College Board’s resources for exam preparation, including the
®
personal progress checks (PPCs), available on AP Classroom. There are also daily
®
®
videos available through AP Classroom and AP Language’s YouTube channel,
which promote further practice and study of all of the Big Ideas and skills necessary
for mastery.
The Language of Composition offers three chapters of foundational instruction that
®
teach the skills necessary for the three essays on the AP Exam. The following six
®
chapters provide continued practice and closer study, along with AP -style
assessments with every reading and at the end of every chapter. Requiring students to
practice these types of essays and providing feedback that uses the exam rubrics will
be the best way to help students prepare for the exam. Reading widely on a variety of
subjects from a range of time periods is another essential component of exam
preparation. Class and small-group discussions will help students develop the critical
thinking skills they need to be able to tackle complex texts and answer multiple-choice
®
questions on the exam. Sample AP -style multiple-choice and free-response questions
are provided throughout the student edition, and suggestions for using previous exam
prompts are provided throughout the Teacher’s Edition.
