Welcome to Ideas in Literature

Ideas are at the heart of the AP® English Literature Course. As AP® teachers, one of our
Copyright (c) 2023 Bedford, Freeman & Worth Publishers. Uncorrected proofs were used with this sample chapter.
primary goals is to help students read and write about ideas rather than topics. Our approach
                    is simple: in everything we do, we ask students to move from the concrete to the abstract;
from the literal to the figurative. So, from every Big Idea workshop, to every text students
Distributed by Bedford, Freeman & Worth Publishers. Strictly for use with its products. Not for redistribution.
read and analyze, to every literary argument they write, students are focused on building
interpretations about important ideas and themes that are part of the human experience.
The foundation of Ideas in Literature is built upon a spiraled and sequenced skill-based
program for AP® English Literature deeply aligned to the nine units in the AP® English
Literature and Composition Course and Exam Description (CED). Each of the nine units
                    includes four essential components.
The Big Idea Workshops introduce the core concepts of the course that are outlined in
the AP® CED and help students build analytical and interpretative reading skills.
The Ideas in Literature sections are small thematic collections of practice texts that
also help students understand the ideas at the heart of timeless literature.
The Composition Workshops help students apply the skills of the unit to their own writing.
The Preparing for the AP® Exam sections help build FRQ writing skills and give
                       students experience with AP®-style MCQs.

That’s it. Four clear sections with distinct purposes

As we wrote this book, we wanted to make sure we made a book that was simple for you to
use but also allowed enough flexibility to suit your needs.
